New Battle of the Immortals gameplay trailer

Perfect World Entertainment’s upcoming PvP focused hack-n-slash MMO Battle of the Immortals now has a gameplay trailer showing off its goods. You’re probably wondering whether or not this game is up your alley. Well, this video will probably help answer most of that question for you.

Did we mention the game will have demonic hot rod mounts as well as kung-fu pandas and ninja master turtles as pets? Don’t get too worked up just yet, because the closed beta isn’t coming until mid-April. We’re sure to have more videos and information about Battle of the Immortals leading up to the beta process, though. So if your interest is piqued, at least you’ll be able to maintain that insatiable lust for knowledge.

Find the rather lengthy gameplay trailer after the break.

EVE Evolved: Staying safe in high security space

One of EVE Online’s defining factors is the idea that you’re not completely safe anywhere in the game. If you’re not docked in a station or securely logged off, there’s always a chance that someone will pick a fight with you. Many pilots opt to stay in the relative safety of high security space but even this isn’t an absolutely safe area. Suicide attacks, corporate wars, can flippers and loot thieves are a common sight in New Eden and if you don’t know how to handle them, you could find yourself on the business end of a 150mm railgun.

In this guide for newer EVE players, I look at the main threats you could be exposed to in high security space and how to keep yourself safe in spite of them.

Fantasy Earth Zero beta beginning March 3rd

It’s been a long and winding road getting Fantasy Earth Zero over to western markets, but the wait gets shorter every day. The game was announced not too long ago as being due for our shores, and the release is even closer than we might have guessed. Not only is the beta beginning on March 3rd with the client now available for download, players can look forward to a variety of in-game events to celebrate the participants.

The most obvious benefit is that testers in the open beta will receive a code for a special weapon, done up in gold and silver with turquoise inlays. A contest is also being held for the “best” bug report, with the top prize worth $30 in the unfortunately-named potcash and a special hat. As if that weren’t enough, there will be special GM-hosted battle events and question-and-answer sessions with the GMs, offering assistance in learning how to play and how to get the most from the game. Gamepot is throwing quite a bit behind the launch of the game, so if you’re looking for a new free-to-play title you may wish to give Fantasy Earth Zero’s beta a go.

[ Thanks to Evan for the tip! ]

One Shots: A quiet romance

There’s something to be said for the quiet of a Sunday — and for the lovely architecture and fashion of days gone by. That’s why we couldn’t resist this picturesque Sword of the New World screenshot sent in to us by FragmentaryHorcrux of the Fontaineblanc family on the Bristia server. The other thing that makes this excellent is the thought put into the note that came in along with it. After all, One Shots is just as much about what players are doing — and love — in their favorite MMOs. As such, since he sent in a great big note we’re going to turn the rest of today’s post over to him.

Remember if you’d like to join the fun and tell us why your favorite game is your favorite game, email your screenshots to us here at oneshots AT massively DOT com along with your name, the name of the game, and a descripion. We’ll post it out here and give you the credit. For now, on with FragmentaryHorcrux’s letter — just be sure to check out the rest of it behind the break!

This shot shows one of the many romantic vistas of the Port of Coimbra in the game; a Scout, Fighter and Elementalist at the Lookout Point with the Eastern part of the town and the ocean in the background.

Earth Eternal takes players Down Below

The team over at Sparkplay Media have been hard at work polishing up Earth Eternal as they move towards the game’s eventual release. This dedication to the ‘it’s done when it’s done‘ MMO development is certainly a great thing to see — especially when it comes hand in hand with fun new content!

The newest patch, 0.8.5, adds a spooky new dungeon called The Down Below for players to explore. This area is an excavated ruin in Midland between New Badari and Grunes Tal that offers players 10 enormous new areas and 30 named mobs just perfect for groups of 5 level 33 to 36 players. There are also a bunch of fixes and updates in patch 0.8.5 that players of all levels will definitely want to read up on.

The Earth Eternal beta is open for any and all people who have been interested in the game, but haven’t had a chance to try it out. So if checking out browser-based MMOs where you get to play animals, robots, or demons sounds like something you’d enjoy, head on over to the Earth Eternal site and get signed up to play!

Find creepy cats in Fallen Earth screenshot caption contest

What in the world is a double-cat? Well, Fallen Earth is currently holding a special kind of caption contest where players will find out, shortly followed by the rest of the world. It remains to be seen whether we shriek in horror or laugh in a fit of terror-filled glee. Either way, your caption will probably help a lot.

Oh wait, here’s a double-cat right now. So, players are to search the sandbox MMO world for this hair-curling (or straightening, for some) double-cat, screenshot it and then put a caption on top of the image. It sounds tough, but we believe in random strangers all the time — especially when they’re our readers.

So if you happen across the mythical creature and feel up to the challenge, send your submission in to fecontest AT fallenearth DOT com and perhaps you could win a super special Fallen Earth poster signed by the dev team!

The breakdown of Final Fantasy XI’s VanaFest 2010 announcements

After a month of heavy anticipation from the fans, VanaFest 2010 finally has come and given us all the information that we could want about where the game is heading from here. And the show did stay focused upon Final Fantasy XI — the only mention of Final Fantasy XIV was the announcement that its first wave of beta testing will start on March 11th with a limited number of participants. That left quite a bit of show left to detail all of the changes coming to the game.

And there was certainly a lot of news to be shared. An increase in level cap, new add-on zones, job reviews, conclusions to existing content, server merges, new seasonal gear — there was no shortage of surprising announcements. Continue on past the cut for the short version of what came out during the show and what players can expect.

In a Perfect World podcast begins operation

In a day and age where we all seem to have mobile devices kicking around, podcasts are great for keeping up with news and opinions on your favorite topics while still being on the go. Needless to say, we’re a bit fond of podcasts around here, so we’re happy to announce the first full episode of Perfect World Entertainment’s official podcast, In a Perfect World, is available for download. Covering the full range of Perfect World Entertainment’s products, the first show includes discussion on Battle of the Immortals, Perfect World International, Ether Saga Online, and Jade Dynasty.

Unsurprisingly, the centerpiece of the Battle of the Immortals segment is an explanation of the game’s delay until mid-April. There are also previews of the next few Perfect World International events, discussion of the recently-added player-made mount in Ether Saga Online, and in-game events in Jade Dynasty. Various download and aggregator links for the podcast are available on the official blog entry, along with a small contest to win a Barbarian Tiger statue. If you’re a fan of the multitude of free-to-play games the company offers, it should be worth the time spent listening.

The Daily Grind: Feeling jaded on MMOs?

Reading the comments around Massively, sometimes we wonder if any of our readers are feeling jaded with the current crop of MMOs. In fact, we often wonder if even the upcoming titles like All Points Bulletin, Final Fantasy XIV and Star Wars: The Old Republic are of any interest to many of you.

And, if nothing out there is really doing it for you, we’d like to hear what would. Of course, we’re far more interested in hearing what isn’t appealing to you and why. It’s an unpredictable world out there where games like Perpetuum look to meld open economy/PvP with giant robots in the future. So why wouldn’t anyone elses’ crazy MMO idea have a shot at taking root?

Myst Online roars back to life with a Welcome Back block party

This is the Myst that doesn’t end, yes it goes on and on my friends… All jokes about the amazing resilience of Myst Online: URU Live aside, it appears that things are going well since Cyan Worlds brought the game back online. In a post on the official forums, it appears that the CAVCON (or Cavern Condition) is standing at 4, which — unlike DEFCON — is a good thing. CAVCON 4 indicates that they’ve gotten enough donations to cover the current operating expenses and are able to put a little to the side for the future. There have also been 13,997 accounts created, and 46,881 logins during the week ending Feb. 24th — very good news!

To celebrate the resurrection of MO:UL, the Guild of Messengers is reporting that there is going to be an enormous “Return to URU Block Party” held this upcoming weekend: March 5-7. The party is being thrown by the Guild of Maintainers, and is open for everyone to attend — from the old-school cavern-crawling D’ni scholars to brand new seekers fresh from the desert!

If you’ve ever wanted to try out Myst Online: URU Live but didn’t know anyone in the game, this is a great way to meet some new friends and fellow adventurers. So check out Sera’s great new player guide, strap on your Ki, and we’ll see you in the caverns!

MAG moves to patch 1.03

For better or worse, most MMOs these days live and die by combat. That goes doubly so for the MMOFPS field, since it’s difficult to have a game with “shooter” right in the genre descriptor without some form of lethal ordnance being unloaded. MAG, the massive squad-based shooter on the PS3, has made a major overhaul to its combat system with patch 1.03, designed to address several community concerns and elements that the designers felt were unfair and unfun. A large-scale weapon overhaul has taken place as the centerpiece of the patch, with the effectiveness of several weapons and strategies being re-tuned.

The short version: shorter-range weapons have been toned down in terms of their accuracy at range, sights have been toned down for a similar reason, and both battle rifles and rocket launchers have received notable buffs. There’s also greater consistency in firing through thin materials such as tents. With changes to the warnings for charges, faster gear switching, and decreased respec costs, the patch also brings improvements not solely linked to weapon balance. MAG players have the patch available now, and we’re hoping that the shifts are keeping players more entertained and less frustrated at someone sniping them from half a map away with a shotgun.

Soul of the Ultimate Nation unearths Aiort graveyard

The crew over at ijji.com have just released a new content update for Soul of the Ultimate Nation, and this one has some nice additions for long-time players. The update introduces a new area called the Aiort graveyards, perfect for those level 100 and higher characters. Did I say higher? Yes! That’s because this new update also raises the level cap in Soul of the Ultimate Nation to a mind-bending level 115.

Along with the new area and level cap increase, players are being treated to over 150 new quests for players from level 70 on up in places like Etherain, Valley of Dragonkin, the Cursed Tower, and of course within the Aiort graveyards.

The Mog Log: You’ve got questions, we’ve got deflections

It’s time to kick off one of the features that we’re hoping will become a regular standby on The Mog Log — community questions and answers. It’s a chance for you to all ask the questions about the game that you’d like answered, and a chance for me to shuffle awkwardly and stare at my feet. Kidding aside, if you have a Final Fantasy XI or Final Fantasy XIV question that you’d like answered, send them to me, and I’ll happily answer them to the best of my ability. It’s all the edification of research without the actual research part.

We’ll start with a question from Simon:
“Are we sure about when the beta for FFXIV is going to start?”

Nothing is certain, least of all what Square-Enix decides to do. Right now, they’re content with not filling us in on the start date of beta, but they might very well share that tomorrow at VanaFest. On the flip side, they might hold on to that tidbit until after the stateside launch of Final Fantasy XIII, just to keep excitement up for the title. Keep your eyes peeled tomorrow, we should know then.

Live from Earth-Two: DC Universe Online introduces Power Girl

The trickle of information coming from Sony Online Entertainment about DC Universe Online can’t be described as a flood quite yet, but it’s certainly increasing — particularly with the addition of the video Q & A sessions and the upcoming weekly comic.

DC Universe Online is still rolling out the cast members along with all the new information, with the latest addition being Kara Starr, also known as Power Girl. This young protégé of Superman is from Earth-Two, in a parallel universe that gives her the standard allotment of Kryptonian powers under a yellow sun. She’s got flight and invulnerability as well as super-strength, super-speed, super-flight, and super-…well, assets. So maybe she’s not exactly like Superman.

Sony Online Entertainment released the standard concept art as well as several action screenshots, so take a look at the gallery below for a first view of Power Girl.

In just two days, Lord of the Rings Online players will be treated to a great chunk of new content in Book 1: Oath of the Rangers — and of course, we got a sneak peek! In the meantime, players are finishing up story arcs, or running new alt characters through familiar lands such as the beautiful spot we see above. This One Shots comes to us from Dylan G. who writes in: [Here's a picture of] my level 17 human minstrel. This is my character standing in front of Duillond. [Lord of the Rings Online] amazes me every day with the awesome landscape and world it has.

Whether new or old, we love to see screenshots of the MMOs you’re playing. Just send those in to us here at oneshots At massively DOT com along with your name, the name of the game, and a description of what we’re seeing. We’ll post it out here and give you the credit!
